SEOUL RELATS POLICE STATION INVESTIGATING SUSPECTED INDIVIDUAL CARRYING A WEAPON NEAR SINRIM STATION
Seoul Gwanak Police Station announced on the 21st that a man in his 20s, Mr. A, was under investigation without detention on charges of roaming around the vicinity of Sinrim Station while carrying a weapon.
The police arrested Mr. A on charges of violating the Violent Crime Act after receiving a citizen report of witnessing him wearing a weapon on his waist and wandering around at around 2 pm the previous day.
It was revealed that Mr. A did not swing the weapon or threaten pedestrians, and he stated to the police that he carried the weapon for self-defense because he found Sinrim-dong to be frightening.
After confirming that Mr. A suffered from a mental illness, the police released him to his family.
Previously, there was an incident where a woman in her 30s was attacked and sexually assaulted by a man in his 30s, Mr. Choi, who was wearing brass knuckles (a metal blunt weapon worn on the fingers), on a hiking trail near Sinrim-dong Park. The victim was transferred to the hospital but unfortunately passed away two days later. Following the incident, a banner from the district recommending hiking in pairs or more was hung at the entrance to the hiking trail in Sinrim-dong.
It was determined that Mr. Choi had no personal connection to the victim. During the police investigation, he stated, "I followed the victim with the intention of sexually assaulting her while walking on the hiking trail. My goal was to commit sexual assault, and I had no intention of killing her." He also mentioned that he was aware that there were no closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) near Sinrim-dong Park, a place he frequently visited.
The police changed the charge against Mr. Choi from "sexual assault causing injury" to "rape-murder." Unlike the general murder charge with a minimum sentence of five years in prison, the charge of rape-murder is punishable by death or life imprisonment if the charge is proven.
Last month, there was another incident where a man in his 30s killed one man in his 20s and injured three other men by swinging a weapon in an alley near Sinrim Station Exit 4. As a result, residents anxiety continues to rise.
