LS MnM, 'EVBM온산' 설립에 6700억원 투자
LS MnM, 670 billion won invested in the establishment of EVBM Onsan secondary battery material complex factory
LS MnM announced on the 27th that it will invest 670 billion won in the establishment of EVBM Onsan, a secondary battery material complex factory.
EVBM Onsan will be located on a site of 95,000 square meters adjacent to the Onsan refinery in Ulsan. It plans to create a production line that maximizes efficiency by connecting the MHP (Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate) refining facility, which is a nickel intermediate product, with the black mass refining facility, which pre-processes waste batteries.
The process includes groundbreaking in the first half of next year, completion and test operation in 2026, and full-scale production in early 2027. It will produce key materials for cathodes such as nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, and manganese sulfate. The lithium contained in the black mass will be recovered separately in another process to produce lithium hydroxide, a major material for the cathode.
In the case of nickel sulfate, which is classified as a future core business of the company, it will have an annual production capacity of 22,000 tons (based on nickel metal) in the first stage of EVBM Onsan. In the second stage, a complex factory with a capacity of 40,000 tons will be expanded in Saemangeum. The goal is to establish a nickel sulfate production system of 62,000 tons by 2029, which corresponds to approximately 1.25 million electric vehicles. LS-ENF Battery Solution, a group subsidiary currently promoting the construction of a cathode production plant in Saemangeum, is also expected to create synergies.
Since EVBM Onsan will be located near the Onsan refinery, the company can secure cost competitiveness by utilizing the existing infrastructure for copper refining. The company explained that it can secure differentiated competitiveness through the global sourcing network and wet/dry refining technology that it has acquired in the copper refining business.
For the procurement of battery recycling raw materials, LS MnM will cooperate with its subsidiary, GM. GM will play a role as a testbed to secure pre-processing technology for recycling waste batteries. Additionally, to expand recycling volume, there will be investments in pre-processing...
