KG Mobility (KGM) has established itself as a leading player in the pickup truck segment. At a recent test drive event for the Musso pickup truck held on the 12th, a representative from KGM emphasized the companys expertise in this category. Since launching the Musso Sports in 2002, KGM has introduced several successful models, including the Actyon Sports, Korando Sports, and Rexton Sports, effectively pioneering the domestic pickup truck market, which was previously considered barren.

This year, KGM has rebranded its lineup, moving from the Rexton to the Musso, paying homage to its heritage from the former SsangYong Motor. The new Musso lineup features an exciting dual offering of powerful diesel and smooth gasoline engines. Traditionally, the pickup truck segment has been dominated by diesel models, but KGM has now introduced a gasoline powertrain tailored for domestic driving conditions, enhancing its performance. Notably, the company has not discontinued its popular diesel model, which continues to lead sales.

During a recent test drive, I had the opportunity to experience both the Musso gasoline and diesel models on a round trip from the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, to a cafe in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, taking about three hours. The first model I drove was the Musso diesel. It was immediately apparent that the diesel variant delivered the robust power expected from a pickup truck. The torque figures tell the story: the 2.2 LET diesel engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, boasts 45 kg·m of torque compared to the gasoline versions 38.7 kg·m. Despite a somewhat rugged driving feel, the diesel engine demonstrated instant and consistent power when climbing hills, making it a suitable choice for those needing to carry heavy loads in the bed.

On the return trip, I switched to the gasoline model, which was noticeably smoother and quieter than its diesel counterpart. With a power output of 217 horsepower, the gasoline variant surpasses the diesels 202 horsepower, offering a different driving experience that caters to urban and highway settings. This versatility is part of KGMs strategy to appeal to a broader audience while maintaining its stronghold in the pickup truck market. As KGM continues to innovate and adapt to consumer preferences, it solidifies its position as a top choice for pickup trucks in South Korea.
