Kim Gilli Claims Gold in Womens 1500m at 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics

At the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, South Korean short track ace Kim Gilli from Seongnam City Hall proudly wore the gold medal after winning the womens 1500m event. Reflecting on her success, Kim stated, "I believe in myself because I have put in a lot of effort into my training."
On the 21st of February, during a press conference held at the Korea House in Villa Neve Campiglio, Italy, Kim shared her thoughts with the media.
In addition to her gold medal in the 1500m, Kim played a significant role in leading the South Korean team to victory in the womens 3000m relay, achieving a remarkable double gold at her first Olympics. Furthermore, she secured a bronze medal in the 1000m event as well.
However, the competition was not without its disappointments. In the mixed 2000m relay semifinal, Kim collided with the U.S. athlete, Karrin Stoddard, leading to South Koreas unfortunate failure to reach the finals. After the mixed relay, Kim was visibly upset and struggled to hide her tears. She also faced challenges in the 1000m semifinal, where she experienced a slip due to a collision with another competitor.
Kim remarked, "My falls were unintentional, so I do not blame my skills. I believe in myself because I have put in the effort required to prepare for this competition."
She also mentioned that the titles and expectations placed upon her serve as motivation. "It’s an honor to be referred to as the next ace following Minjeong Choi. Such titles inspire me to work even harder. I will put in my best effort to show a great performance," she said.
In the womens 1500m final, held in the early hours of the day, Kim Gilli crossed the finish line first, surpassing her teammate Minjeong Choi to claim the gold medal.
Following the race, Minjeong Choi announced, "I am not retiring from sports, but this will be my last Olympics." With this statement, Kim Gilli is poised to inherit the title of ‘Queen’ in the short track speed skating arena as she continues to build her legacy.
