Decision-making in warfare and choices in daily life are fundamentally the same; the only difference is the intensity of the situation. In critical moments, it is essential to calm ones emotions, structure the choices available, and consider the responses of others. This approach can be cultivated through the study of military history, which serves as an excellent resource for developing such a mindset.

Recently, Choi Joong-kyung, the Chairman of the Korea-U.S. Association and former Minister of Knowledge Economy, shared these insights during an interview at the associations office in Sunhwa-dong, Seoul. His new book, "Life Strategies Learned from War," traverses the history of warfare from the battles of Carthage to the Imjin War, World War II, and the Korean War, connecting historical battles to contemporary life, management, and diplomatic issues.

This book is a culmination of Chois long-standing interest in military history, which began in his twenties. While serving as a junior officer in the Army in Gangwon Province, he started reading tactical manuals and combat records. His experience in economic administration and diplomacy has allowed him to extend the logic of decision-making found in military history to practical problems in the real world. Choi has held various positions, including Vice Minister of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Ambassador to the Philippines, Senior Economic Secretary to the President, and Minister of Knowledge Economy during the Lee Myung-bak administration.

He explained, "I have long believed that combat is the most intense form of management activity and a way of life. I have thought for a long time that the logic of judgment and choice revealed in extreme situations can be applied to daily life. With this awareness, I accumulated relevant materials and compiled them into a book."

While writing the book, Choi emphasized the need for strategic thinking and decision-making skills throughout society. He believes that only then can society take a significant leap forward. War exemplifies the importance of such strategies and judgments, making them crucial for personal and societal development. Through his book, Choi aims to inspire readers to reflect on the parallels between warfare and the challenges faced in everyday life.
