Celebrating 30 Years: Director Ryoo Seung-wan Reflects on His Journey in Cinema

Upon being asked about his feelings upon reaching the milestone of 30 years in the film industry, renowned Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan responded with surprise, saying, "Really? I didn’t even know." For him, it has always been about continuing to create films and doing what he loves.
At 53, Ryoos three-decade career is marked by numerous accolades and descriptors. He has been dubbed Koreas Tarantino for rewriting the grammar of action films, self-taught film enthusiast for shaking up Chungmuro with ultra-low-budget films, and 10 million director for evolving from B-grade action flicks to blockbuster commercial cinema. His continual pursuit of change and expansion within the realm of filmmaking is a testament to his innovative spirit.
On the day after the release of his latest film, Humint, Ryoo was met at his production company, Ouyunaigang, located in Seouls Amsa-dong. The spotlight, however, was not solely on the film but also on a new interview book he co-authored with writer Ji Seung-ho, titled Conditions of Fun.
While it was presumed that the books release was a deliberate celebration of his 30th anniversary, Ryoo dismissed the idea, saying, "I’m not good with numbers. I can’t even celebrate anniversaries properly, and I always get scolded by my wife for it." He has been running Ouyunaigang with his wife, actress and producer Kang Hye-jung, since 2005.
As he explained why he avoids being fixated on numbers in filmmaking, he mentioned the importance of attitude. "In our company, the term commercial film is taboo. The moment we use that term, our entire purpose becomes focused on box office numbers. As filmmakers, we must remember that each audience member counts..."
Ryoo’s approach emphasizes the art of storytelling and the emotional connection with viewers, rather than merely aiming for commercial success. This philosophy has been a driving force behind his diverse body of work, which has consistently challenged conventions and explored new narratives.
As he reflects on the past 30 years, Ryoo Seung-wans journey in the film industry serves as an inspiration for aspiring filmmakers, showcasing the balance between creativity and the realities of the commercial landscape. His commitment to crafting meaningful cinema, regardless of the numbers, continues to resonate with audiences both in Korea and around the world.
