Ilker Çatak Wins Golden Bear at 76th Berlin International Film Festival with Yellow Letters

At the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), Turkish-born German director Ilker Çatak won the prestigious Golden Bear for Best Film with his work Yellow Letters. The awards ceremony took place on the night of the 21st (local time) at the Berlinale Palast in Berlin, where the jury announced the winners in eight categories, including the Golden Bear. This marks the first time a German director has received the Golden Bear since Fatih Akins Head-On in 2004, as reported by DPA.
Yellow Letters tells the story of a couple of theater artists whose lives are uprooted by national power in Turkey, facing a crisis of family disintegration while struggling between survival and their beliefs. The film, produced in Turkish, has been praised for its direct portrayal of an artists conscience and choices under state oppression. In his acceptance speech, Director Çatak stated, "The real threat is not us, but the dictators," adding, "The nihilists of our era seize power and destroy our lives." He further encouraged the audience, saying, "Let’s not fight each other, but fight against them."
While the Golden Bear is awarded for Best Film, the Silver Bear is divided into various categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Acting, Best Screenplay, and Artistic Contributions. This structure was adopted by the festival to broadly highlight not only the films message but also the various achievements of the creative process.
The Jury Grand Prize Silver Bear was awarded to Turkish director Emin Alper for his film Salvation.
