The 76th Berlin International Film Festival concluded on February 21, 2026, showcasing a sharp sense of contemporary spirit and aesthetic attempts that blurred boundaries, drawing significant attention from the global film community. Instead of the glamour of Cannes or the classical authority of Venice, the festival focused on the voices from marginalized places, rigorously exploring real-world issues through a cinematic lens.

The prestigious Golden Bear award was awarded to Yellow Letters, directed by Ilker Çatak, a German filmmaker of Turkish descent. This marks the first time in 22 years that a German director has won the Golden Bear, following Fatih Akın’s victory in 2004. Yellow Letters tells the story of a couple of theater artists whose lives are uprooted by state power, presenting a poignant depiction of the conscience and choices of artists under state repression. According to Reuters, Çatak expressed in his acceptance speech, "The true threat is when nihilists seize power and destroy lives. We must not fight each other but unite against them," delivering a powerful message.

This award is noteworthy as it continues the Berlin Film Festivals longstanding awareness of political issues. In recent years, the festival has recognized films that address hot contemporary topics, such as Adama by Nicolas Philibert in 2023, Dahomey by Mati Diop in 2024, and Dreams by Dag Johan Haugerud in 2025, all of which have received the Golden Bear. This year, the festival once again honored a film that tackles the themes of state power and personal ethics with its highest award, maintaining its clear commitment to these issues.

The identity of this years festival was further reflected in the acceptance speech of Asian actress Michelle Yeoh, who received an honorary Golden Bear, making her the first Asian woman to receive this recognition. The festival has consistently aimed to elevate voices and stories that challenge dominant narratives and shed light on underrepresented perspectives in the film industry. As the festival concludes, it leaves a lasting impression of its dedication to exploring profound themes that resonate with our times.
