Addressing the Labor Crisis in Construction with Automation and AI

The construction industry is facing a crisis known as the labor cliff. As skilled workers retire, the influx of new talent has come to a halt. The only alternative to fill these gaps seems to be through the automation of equipment and the implementation of Physical AI.
During an interview on the 20th, Lee Myung-han, CEO of Spanner, emphasized the importance of digital transformation in the construction industry. Founded in June 2020, Spanner is a technology-based startup that is transforming construction machinery into automatic robots by integrating AI and sensors. The name Spanner is derived from Extreme Spanner, reflecting the companys mission to provide solutions that fix problems in the construction industry by applying technology with a field-oriented mindset.
Lee has approximately 15 years of experience with Doosan, where he was involved in overseas services, business strategy, and organizational development. He gained confidence in the construction automation market while working at Doosan Bobcats European branch, where he observed the seamless integration of automation technologies throughout Northern Europe. Starting in 2019, he took charge of in-house venture incubation at Doosan Infracore, further awakening his interest in the startup ecosystem.
His colleagues shared his vision. Joining him as co-founders were Park Joo-han, Chief Financial Officer and an expert in mergers and acquisitions and venture investment, and Shin Heung-joo, Chief Technology Officer with a background in automation technology at Volvo Construction Equipment. Lee recalled, "In the construction markets of Northern Europe and the United States, there is a significant labor shortage, which naturally advances automation technologies. I believed there were opportunities to be found there."
The true value of Spanner has already been validated in the U.S. market, where the demand for automated solutions has surged due to labor shortages. As the construction sector continues to evolve, companies like Spanner are paving the way for a future where automation and AI play crucial roles in addressing the challenges faced by the industry.
