Korean Machine Tool Industry Sees Opportunities Amid US-Iran Conflict and AI Transformation
Kim Won-jong, Chairman of the Korean Machine Tool Industry Association and CEO of DN Solutions, has projected that the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran could provide a boon for the machine tool industry. He anticipates that the acceleration of artificial intelligence (AI) transformation will lead to a reshaping of the machine tool sector, traditionally dominated by Germany and Japan.
Speaking at a press conference during the opening of the 21st SIMTOS (Seoul International Manufacturing Technology Show 2026) in Goyang, South Korea, Kim noted that the recent turmoil from the US-Iran war is likely to increase demand for machine tools. He explained that military-related sectors, along with automobiles, semiconductors, and aerospace, are areas where the demand for machine tools is significant. Kim stated, "As inventories of war-related products deplete or new facility investments are made, the demand for metal processing will also rise." However, he cautioned that, similar to other industries, the disruption of supply chains caused by the conflict could pose potential risks.
Regarding the ongoing digital transformation (DX) and AI integration across the machine tool industry, Kim remarked that these developments could significantly disrupt the existing market dynamics. He elaborated, "In the past, the technological prowess and precision of hardware in machine tools were absolutely critical. There were limits to catching up with German and Japanese companies that have extensive experience and accumulated know-how." He added that DN Solutions acquisition of Heller, a 132-year-old traditional machine tool company in Germany, revealed a higher-than-expected level of technological sophistication.
Kim believes that this landscape will be entirely transformed with the advent of DX and AI. He emphasized, "The future machine tools will go beyond simple cutting equipment..."
