Lee Seung-hoon Makes History as First Korean to Reach Freestyle Ski Halfpipe Finals at 2026 Olympics

Lee Seung-hoon, the 21-year-old figurehead of Korean freestyle skiing from Korea National Sport University, made history by becoming the first Korean athlete to advance to the finals in the mens halfpipe event at the 2026 Milan-Cortina dAmpezzo Winter Olympics.
On January 20 (Korean time), Lee participated in the mens halfpipe qualifiers held at the Livigno Snowpark in Italy, where he scored a total of 76.00 points across two rounds, finishing in 10th place.
The freestyle halfpipe event involves athletes performing aerial tricks on a semi-cylindrical slope, with judges scoring their performances to determine the rankings. Lee Seung-hoon competed in a halfpipe event distinct from the snowboard halfpipe, which was also attended by fellow athlete Choi Ga-on from Sehwa High School.
During the qualifiers, competitors had two opportunities to perform, with the highest score determining which athletes advance to the finals. The top 12 performers secured their tickets to the final round.
Lee burst onto the scene after finishing as the runner-up at the Junior World Championships in 2021 and made a notable impact by winning a bronze medal at the World Cup in Calgary, Canada, in February 2024, becoming the first Korean freestyle skier to podium in a World Cup event.
In February of last year, at the Harbin Winter Asian Games, Lee achieved a historic feat by winning a gold medal in the halfpipe, marking him as the first freestyle skier from Korea to win at the Winter Asian Games.
With his successful qualification for the Olympic finals, Lee Seung-hoon is set to challenge for a medal. He secured 8th place with a score of 76.00 in his first qualifying run, but during his second attempt, he attempted a difficult jump but failed to land it, solidifying his first round score as his final score, allowing him to secure the 10th position and advance to the finals.
The final round, where medalists will be determined, is scheduled to take place on January 21 at 3:30 AM.
