The 2030 generation is increasingly feeling lonely, with many finding solace in unique social activities like solo drinking bars, French fry meetups, and games like cops and robbers. According to a survey conducted by the market research firm Macromill Embrain on April 22, 2022, which included 1,000 adults aged 19 to 59 across the country, 59.2% of people in their 20s and 52.8% in their 30s reported feeling lonely in their daily lives.

The survey revealed that the desire to express ones inner feelings without a partner or the difficulty in finding someone to talk to was highest among those in their 20s and 30s compared to other age groups. About 60% of respondents in their 20s indicated a strong need for friends to share their emotions with in daily life.

The 2030 generation is addressing their loneliness in various ways. One popular trend is honsul, which means drinking alone. However, honsul bars are places where individuals can visit alone but interact and engage in conversations with various people. This culture began a few years ago in Jeju Island, where solo travelers connected with each other, and it has recently spread to Seoul, becoming a trend since the second half of last year.

Currently, there are over 80 honsul bars operating in Seoul alone. In the past 10 to 15 years, young people primarily sought connections in clubs, sentimental bars, and hunting pubs. Over time, this evolved through guesthouse parties and social gatherings, and now honsul bars have taken over that role.

Similarly, the French fry meetup or gamti gathering is gaining popularity. These gatherings are rapidly spreading through local community platforms. Participants meet at a local fast-food restaurant at a predetermined time, order French fries, and enjoy conversations while eating before naturally dispersing. This approach is low-cost and does not create pressure in relationships, making it a one-time meeting that does not require ongoing commitment, unlike traditional clubs or hobby groups.

Overall, the 2030 generation is finding creative and informal ways to connect with others and combat feelings of loneliness. As social dynamics evolve, these trends reflect the changing landscape of friendship and relationships in a modern context.
