The Passion for Art: Exploring Koreas Favorite Artists and Masterpieces

Everyone experiences a moment of deep fascination with something at least once in their life. The passion of a soccer fan who visits the stadium every weekend or the dedication of a fan following a pop stars concert often begins from a small interest. This curiosity, sparked in a fleeting moment, transforms into ‘fan sentiment,’ becoming a driving force that sustains daily life. Pure art is no exception. A powerful performance by a pianist heard by chance can lead one to travel around the world for concerts, while a melody from a symphony can create a lifelong classical music enthusiast.
So, what are the artists and works that Koreans love the most today? To find the answer, Arte, Koreas largest cultural arts platform, conducted a survey. A total of 366 cultural enthusiasts selected their ‘favorite artists and life-changing masterpieces’ in various fields.
In the realm of classical music, the most chosen Korean artist was pianist Lim Yun-chan. An overwhelming 32.8% of respondents (120 people) selected him as their top choice. Lim Yun-chan made history by becoming the youngest winner ever at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in the United States in 2022. He is also making waves on the world stage, recently winning two awards at the 2024 Gramophone Classical Music Awards for his album Chopin: Etudes in the categories of Piano and Young Artist of the Year. He is the first Korean pianist to receive a Gramophone Award.
In second place, with 104 votes (28.4%), was pianist Cho Seong-jin. Cho Seong-jin gained recognition as the first Korean to win the Chopin International Piano Competition in 2015. Last year, through the classical label Deutsche Grammophon (DG), he celebrated the birth of French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) with a special album.
These results highlight not only the immense talent of Korean artists but also the growing appreciation for classical music among the public. As more individuals develop their interests and passions, the cultural landscape continues to thrive, fueled by the remarkable achievements of these artists. Whether it’s through powerful performances or enchanting melodies, the journey into the world of art remains a source of inspiration and joy for many.
