South Korea Aims to Boost Trade with ASEAN to $300 Billion

On the 26th, Wi Seong-lak, the head of the National Security Office at the Presidential Office, announced ambitions to usher in a new era of trade between South Korea and ASEAN, targeting a trade volume of $300 billion. This initiative aims to strengthen relations with ASEAN, South Koreas third-largest trading partner, by increasing the current trade volume of $200 billion by 50%. In light of the escalating trade conflict between the U.S. and China, South Korea faces the challenge of diversifying its trade relationships, and this plan is seen as a commitment to enhancing cooperation with ASEAN.
During a briefing held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wi stated, "I will present a vision to elevate our relationship to the highest level of comprehensive strategic partnership that ASEAN has with external countries." He added that the administration under President Lee Jae-myung will declare the hosting of a special Korea-ASEAN summit, looking forward to the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-ASEAN relations in 2029. President Lee is expected to outline this vision at the Korea-ASEAN summit on the 27th. Additionally, during the subsequent ASEAN+3 (Korea-China-Japan) summit, President Lee plans to propose cooperation strategies in areas such as finance, food security, and regional security.
Wi emphasized that the Korea-ASEAN summit on the 27th will serve as a debut stage showcasing the Lee Jae-myung administrations focus on ASEAN. He remarked, "The importance of South Korea’s diplomacy towards ASEAN cannot be overstated," citing the unique characteristics of regional diplomatic issues centered around ASEAN in terms of both economic and geopolitical factors. Furthermore, he pointed out that ASEAN provides a diplomatic space where South Korea can exert its influence on par with China and Japan.
Wis announcement of aiming to expand the current $200 billion trade volume with ASEAN to a 300 billion dollar trade era reflects a strategic move to navigate the complexities of the global trade landscape and reinforce South Koreas economic partnerships in the region.
