Prosecutor Removed from Special Investigation Team Over Allegations Related to Kim Geon-hee
The special investigation team led by Prosecutor Min Jung-ki, tasked with probing allegations against Kim Geon-hee, has seen a significant change as Chief Prosecutor Han Mun-hyuk has been reassigned. This decision follows revelations that Han had met privately with a key figure in the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case, prompting the Supreme Prosecutors Office to initiate an investigation into his conduct.
On the 26th, the Min Jung-ki team announced in a press release, "We have confirmed facts that make it difficult to continue the investigation regarding Chief Prosecutor Han, and he will return to the prosecution as of the 27th." This move comes after it was disclosed that Han had met in a private setting with Lee Jong-ho, the former CEO of Black Pearl Investment, who has been identified as a central figure in the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation scandal. Lee was responsible for managing Kim Geon-hees account during the second phase of the stock manipulation.
In a statement issued on the same day, Chief Prosecutor Han explained that he had met Lee during a dinner with a physician friend he had become acquainted with while discussing childrens health issues around July 2021. Han indicated that the friend had asked for permission to join the dinner with someone they had met for work-related discussions, and after a brief greeting, they shared a meal.
The gathering later moved to the friend’s home for drinks, Han elaborated. However, he clarified that at the time of the meeting, Lee was not a suspect in the Deutsche Motors case and did not introduce himself in a way that would have indicated his connection to the investigation. Since Lee was not indicted until late September 2021 and arrested in late October of that year, Han stated he was unaware of Lees involvement.
Additionally, Han noted that he did not exchange business cards or contact information with Lee and has had no personal meetings or communications with him since. He expressed regret over the controversy his actions have caused, stating, "I am sorry for causing this controversy due to my actions."
