Presidential Office Criticizes Lawmakers Defense of Real Estate Holdings
On the 25th, the Presidential Office criticized the explanation provided by the People Power Party leader, Jang Dong-hyuk, regarding his ownership of six real estate properties, including apartments and houses, which he described as mostly for residential use. The Presidential Office referred to his defense as a dismissive explanation of the public. Jang claimed that the total value of his properties is approximately 850 million KRW and expressed willingness to swap his properties with those of President Lee Jae-myung in Bundang.
In a statement to Yonhap News, a Presidential Office official questioned, If six properties are for residential use, does that mean he lives separately from his head and his feet? The official emphasized that opposition leaders should first demonstrate accountability by liquidating speculative assets to earn the publics trust in their sincerity.
Earlier that day, during a press conference, Jang responded to criticism from the Democratic Party, which labeled him as the Chairman of the Real Estate Sweep Committee due to his ownership of multiple properties, including four apartments, an officetel, and a detached house. He firmly rebutted the claims, asserting that his properties are not speculative assets.
Jang clarified, The four apartments that the Democratic Party mentions are valued at around 660 million KRW, and the total value of all my properties is about 850 million KRW. He added, The Democratic Party may wish for me to step down from my position as the chairman of the real estate committee by tarnishing my reputation, but my properties are either for residential purposes or serve other functions.
He further explained that he resides in a 30-pyeong apartment in Guro-gu, Seoul, and has inherited a house from his 94-year-old mother living in the countryside. Since becoming a member of the National Assembly, he has purchased an apartment in his constituency (Chungnam Boryeong and Seocheon) and acquired an officetel near the National Assembly for his legislative activities. Jang also mentioned inheriting a 1/5 share of an apartment in Jinju, Gyeongnam, after his father-in-law recently passed away.
