President Lee Jae-myung Vows to Alleviate Concerns of Overseas Koreans

During his visit to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit, President Lee Jae-myung met with local expatriates and expressed his commitment to creating a country where citizens do not feel anxious about the well-being of their homeland. At a gathering held on the 26th in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, he reflected on the various meanings behind the question, Are you Korean? He noted that depending on the context, it could reflect envy and a desire for friendship or, conversely, suggest that Korea is seen as a strange country.
President Lee acknowledged that there have been times when Koreans abroad worried about the situation back home and the future of South Korea. He emphasized that he would ensure that such concerns would not arise again for the expatriates. He shared a personal sentiment, stating, Hearing the term expatriate evokes a deep emotional response in me. He referenced the phrase in a foreign land across distant seas, noting that Malaysia is approximately 4,000 kilometers away, making it a fitting example of this sentiment.
The president highlighted the extraordinary capabilities of each South Korean citizen, urging compatriots overseas to foster cooperation and support among themselves. He encouraged them with the saying, While individual sticks are easily broken, they remain unbroken when gathered together. This illustrates his belief that by uniting their efforts, they can overcome difficult times more easily.
Additionally, President Lee remarked, You are the face of South Korea. I am proud of you, reinforcing the importance of the expatriates role in representing the country abroad. He pledged to work on institutional improvements to ensure that South Korean citizens can exercise their rights without any discomfort.
