Intense Competition for Incheon Gyeyangs By-Election Heats Up as Key Meeting Falls Through

As the by-election for the Incheon Gyeyang constituency scheduled for June 3 approaches, the competition for nominations within the Democratic Party of Korea is intensifying. The anticipated meeting between former presidential spokesperson Kim Nam-jun and former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil has fallen through.
On the afternoon of the 23rd, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok will attend the K-Government Briefing at the Gyeyang Cultural Center in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, where he will deliver a special lecture. Given that this area is significant as the constituency of President Lee Jae-myung, the event is expected to attract considerable attention from the local political scene.
Initially, this event was expected to feature a tense showdown between Song, who aims to reclaim Gyeyang, and Kim, a close aide to President Lee. However, Song is set to attend his sons law school graduation ceremony, making their meeting unlikely. In an interview with OhmyTV, Song expressed, "I have never been able to attend my sons elementary, middle, high school, or university graduations while being in politics. If I cant go this time, it would be a disqualification as a father. I must attend."
Although Song has relocated to Gyeyang, his previous constituency, he has not explicitly declared his candidacy yet. Nevertheless, lawmakers close to him argue that he should receive a strategic nomination for Gyeyang. Democratic Party Secretary-General Jo Seung-rae mentioned in a press conference the day before that the application for Song’s reinstatement into the party has been transferred from the Incheon city party to the Seoul city party, where it was submitted when he left, and is being processed according to standard procedures.
