Sister Sentenced to Suspended Prison Term for Neglecting Disabled Brother Who Died After Accidents
A woman has received a suspended prison sentence for neglecting her disabled brother, who died after being left unattended following a series of unexplained accidents. The Daegu District Courts Western Branch sentenced the 47-year-old woman, referred to as A, to six months in prison, suspended for one year, after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter and fraud.
Between September 2013 and August 2014, As brother, identified as B, suffered from seven incidents that left him in critical condition. A was accused of failing to care for him adequately, which ultimately led to his death. B, who had an intellectual disability, sustained serious injuries including eye damage, orbital fractures, and multiple rib fractures but did not receive proper medical treatment.
B was taken to the emergency room in August 2014 when his condition worsened, but he passed away the following day. Reports indicated that at the time of his death, B was unable to stand or control his bodily functions.
Prosecutors argued that the timing of Bs accidents was suspicious, as he had taken out five insurance policies shortly before the incidents. They claimed that A intentionally neglected him to claim insurance money, requesting a seven-year prison sentence.
However, the court found insufficient evidence on some charges, declaring A not guilty of certain counts of involuntary manslaughter and fraud. Meanwhile, As husband, C, who was also charged in connection with the case, was released on bail shortly before the sentencing in 2017 and has since been on the run.
The court has postponed proceedings against the couple until Cs whereabouts are confirmed. In July, the court resumed As trial, leading to the recent sentencing, while Cs case is being considered for classification as a permanent unresolved case until the investigation locates him.
