Ryu Seung-ryong Sparks Discussion as a Patriarch in Upcoming Drama Kim Manager

Actor Ryu Seung-ryong raises thought-provoking questions about life as he takes on the role of a patriarch in the new JTBC weekend drama Kim Manager, which premiered on the 22nd at a hotel in Guro-gu, Seoul. During the production presentation, he stated, "The charm of this work lies in raising questions," and expressed his anticipation that the drama would prompt viewers to reflect on what they live for and what they take for granted in life.
Kim Manager tells the story of Manager Kim, who lives a life that appears enviable to others, with a decent job at a large corporation, a home in Seoul, an understanding wife, and a proud son. However, as the things he believed to be solid foundations begin to crumble one by one, the drama explores his transformation and the challenges he faces. The series is based on a popular web novel of the same name.
The drama is directed by Jo Hyun-tak, who won the Baeksang Arts Award for directing with the hit series SKY Castle. He expressed his passion for the project, stating, "I knew about the original novel from the time it was serialized, and I read all three volumes in one go. Since Manager Kim is around my age, I was completely immersed and wanted to direct it as soon as I saw it."
Jo also highlighted the collaborative experience with the original author, saying, "Usually, the original work and the script are separate, but the author of the original novel was present on set. We exchanged great ideas during the production, and we discussed the script a lot. I realized that this kind of collaborative process exists, and I received a lot of help from it."
He added, "Fans of the original work will know about the character Kim Nak-soo, but the portrayal by Ryu Seung-ryong offers a perfect differentiation that sets it apart."
With its combination of a relatable protagonist and the exploration of societal expectations, Kim Manager promises to be a compelling drama that resonates with audiences, encouraging them to ponder the deeper meanings of success and fulfillment in life.
