15-Year-Old Kim Hyun-seo Makes History at the 58th Paganini International Violin Competition

Fifteen-year-old Kim Hyun-seo, currently a student at the Korea National University of Arts, made history by securing third place at the 58th Paganini International Violin Competition, becoming the youngest finalist ever to achieve this feat. The first place went to 17-year-old Zhang Ao-zhe from China, while 22-year-old Rino Yoshimoto from Japan took home the second prize.
The results were announced by the competition organizers on the 25th, local time, shortly after the finals held at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy. In addition to her third-place finish, Kim also received two special awards: the Audience Prize and the Youngest Finalist Award, making her a triple winner at the event.
Born in 2010, Kim Hyun-seo set records as both the youngest participant and the youngest awardee in the competitions history. She earned a total prize of €15,000 (approximately 25.11 million KRW) from her third-place and special awards. Winners are also granted performance opportunities with prestigious orchestras across Italy and around the world, including the Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra, the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, La Fenice Theater, the Bologna Festival, and the Paganini Genoa Festival.
During the finals, held at the Carlo Felice Theater in Genoa, Kim delivered a remarkable performance, playing Paganinis Violin Concerto No. 1 and Tchaikovskys Violin Concerto accompanied by an orchestra.
The Paganini International Violin Competition is a prestigious global competition held in Genoa, Italy, established in 1954 to honor the legendary violinist Niccolò Paganini. This competition has been a launching pad for many great violinists, including Korean violinist Yang In-mo, who won in 2015.
Kim is the last student of the late Professor Kim Nam-yun, known as the matriarch of the Korean violin community, who also taught Yang In-mo. The fact that these two students left significant marks on the same stage a decade apart adds to the historical significance of Kim’s achievement.
