Seouls Gangnam District to Build Major Underground Complex and Green Space
A large-scale underground complex is set to be built beneath Yeongdong-daero in Gangnam, Seoul. The city plans to establish a metropolitan transportation hub in this area while creating a vast green space above ground, aimed at transforming it into a Korean version of La Défense, akin to the suburban business district near the Seine in Paris.
According to the Seoul city government on the 18th, the Yeongdong-daero underground complex development team has recently completed the excavation of the underground space and has begun construction on a five-story underground structure. This structural work is expected to continue until 2028. The Yeongdong-daero complex development project will create a metropolitan transfer center with a facility area of 210,000 square meters along approximately one kilometer of underground space between the Coex intersection (Bongeunsa Station on Seoul Subway Line 9) and the Samsung intersection. The underground city being developed will be five levels deep, equivalent to 30 times the area of Jamsil Baseball Stadium, marking it as the largest underground space development in South Koreas history. The total project cost is estimated at 1.9 trillion won.
The project will also feature a complex transfer center for the Samsung-Dongtan express railway, the GTX-A and C lines, the Wirye-Sinsa light rail, and subway lines 2 (Samsung Station) and 9 (Bongeunsa Station), along with railway tunnels, parking facilities, and commercial public spaces. This is expected to establish a convenient rail system connecting various parts of the Greater Seoul Area centered around Gangnam.
Additionally, existing roads will be placed underground, allowing for the construction of a plaza above ground measuring 18,000 square meters. This surface plaza will be 260 meters long and 53 meters wide, comprising a central square and a terrace garden. Once completed, the plaza will facilitate movement between Coex and the Global Business Complex (GBC) at ground level.
The city envisions this area to resemble the new town (international business district) outside of Paris, La Défense, where highways and subways run underground while large architectural structures and green spaces coexist above ground, creating an urban masterpiece. The Seoul government emphasizes that this development will enhance the citys landscape and provide significant urban amenities.
