Semifive Revolutionizes Semiconductor Development with Design Platform Innovation

We are changing the pace and cost structure of semiconductor development.
In a recent interview at Semifives headquarters in Yatap-dong, Seongnam, CEO Jongmyung Hyun emphasized, "We are evolving from a design house to a design platform company that standardizes and automates design processes." He believes, "Just as TSMC has transformed the industry landscape by platforming manufacturing, the era of design becoming a core platform has arrived."
Jongmyung Hyun, a semiconductor design expert, graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in electronic engineering and obtained both a Masters and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Unlike many of his peers, he chose the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as his first workplace.
While consulting on management strategies for global semiconductor companies at BCG, he sensed that the demand for application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) would increase in the AI era, characterized by small-batch, diverse production. He also recognized the rising importance of speed and efficiency in design and subsequently founded Semifive in 2019.
Semifive started as a design house that connects fabless companies with foundries. A design house transforms the circuits created by fabless companies into physical blueprints that foundries (semiconductor manufacturing service providers) can use for actual production. Chips from leading domestic AI semiconductor fabless firms, such as FuriosaAI and Rebellion, have passed through Semifive and been mass-produced at Samsung Foundry.
Since 2019, Semifive has expanded this boundary by accumulating reusable design assets (IP) and focusing on developing technologies that automate the design process. This has led to the creation of a platform that automates everything from specification writing and architecture design to package development and system software (SW).
The platformization of semiconductor design is a significant step forward, enabling faster and more efficient production processes, which are crucial in todays rapidly evolving technological landscape. This innovation positions Semifive at the forefront of semiconductor design, paving the way for future advancements in the industry.
