In the wake of the US Supreme Courts ruling on the illegality of reciprocal tariffs, South Korean companies are collectively re-evaluating their product production strategies. The reduction of tariffs in key manufacturing bases like India and Vietnam for smartphone, TV, and home appliance manufacturers is viewed positively. With the tariffs expected to shift to a structure of Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) tariffs plus a 15% tariff under Trade Law Article 122, there is a strong expectation that products manufactured in Korea, which has a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US, will gain price competitiveness.

However, the lowered tariffs on Chinese goods could pose challenges for Korean battery and solar companies competing in the US market.

According to industry sources on the 22nd, major Korean export firms such as Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, and LG Electronics held emergency meetings following the Supreme Courts ruling on reciprocal tariffs. In light of the increased uncertainty surrounding production strategies, these companies are focusing on developing response strategies for various future scenarios.

For companies like Samsung and LG, the reduction of tariffs in India and Vietnam from 18% and 20% to 15% respectively means that Korean brands will have enhanced price competitiveness in the US market. India and Vietnam host some of the largest smartphone and home appliance manufacturing plants globally. Additionally, the removal of the potential fentanyl tariff on products from Mexico alleviates concerns for companies with TV and home appliance factories in that region.

The Korea International Trade Association stated that it anticipates a transition in the US tariff structure to Most-Favored-Nation tariffs plus a 15% tariff under Trade Law Article 122. Under the previous structure, South Korea, despite being a FTA partner, faced tariff rates similar to those of Japan and the European Union.

Thus, while the new tariff structure may provide an opportunity for enhanced competitiveness for South Korean products, the situation remains complex, particularly concerning the competitive landscape with Chinese products. As companies navigate these changes, the focus will undoubtedly remain on strategic adaptations to maintain their market positions.
