Korea Electric Power Corporation Shares Surge Following Celebrity Endorsement
On the 6th of this month, shares of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) surged nearly 6% in a single day. Since the beginning of this year, KEPCO has become the third most purchased stock by foreign investors, following Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics Preferred. This surge in interest comes after popular broadcaster Kim Gu-ra visited Haenam County, which is being touted as Koreas potential AI capital.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel GriGura on the 5th, Kim revealed, "I have been paying attention to KEPCO, and I also bought shares in the company." He explained that his interest in KEPCO was sparked by his recent visit to Haenam for filming. Kim stated, "I went to Haenam last week. The local mayor mentioned that plans for data centers from SK Group and Samsung Group are becoming more concrete, suggesting that it will be an incredible place in the future." He added, "The reason global companies are interested in Haenam is due to its excellent energy infrastructure, including wind and solar power, as well as easy access to water."
On that day, KEPCOs stock closed at 46,100 won, marking a 5.98% increase. Foreign investors purchased 26.8 billion won worth of shares, contributing to the stocks rise. KEPCO was the fourth most actively bought stock by foreign investors on that day.
Since the beginning of this year, KEPCO ranks third in net purchases by foreign investors, accumulating approximately 1.34 trillion won in purchases over the past ten months. Only Samsung Electronics, with 8.82 trillion won, and Samsung Electronics Preferred, with 1.53 trillion won, have seen higher net purchases from foreign investors.
As of the market close on the 5th, foreign ownership of KEPCO shares stood at 22.48%, an increase of about 6.8 percentage points compared to the beginning of the year. A researcher from Meritz Securities remarked, "The growing interest from foreign investors in KEPCO is notable and reflects the companys potential in the renewable energy sector."
