Concerns have been raised regarding the detection of a toxin that may cause vomiting and abdominal pain in some products of the premium baby formula brand Aptamil. As a result, recall actions are being implemented across Europe, including in the UK. Many consumers in South Korea, who have purchased Aptamil through overseas direct purchases, are expressing their worries, particularly within parenting communities.

According to reports from the UK BBC and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, there is a possibility that some baby formula products from companies such as Nestlé, Lactalis, and Sanulac in Europe may contain low levels of cereulide, a toxin produced by the foodborne pathogen Bacillus cereus.

Among these products, the French food company Danone began a recall on the 23rd of this month for certain batches of Aptamil First Infant Formula 800g. These products were sold in regions including the UK from May to July of last year, with an expiration date marked for October 31 of this year.

Cereulide is known to be a heat-resistant toxin produced by the Bacillus cereus strain, making it difficult to eliminate during manufacturing and processing. Consumption can lead to acute food poisoning symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) stated, Our investigation confirmed that the contamination originated from the raw material supplier, adding that no toxins were detected in products outside of the affected batches.

Aptamil has gained popularity in South Korea, often referred to as Gangnam Baby Formula or Easy-to-Digest Formula. Given the recent recall news, consumers who have imported the product are understandably anxious about the potential health risks.
