Rising Trend: The Kimjang Vest Captivates Fashion Enthusiasts

Interest in the floral-patterned vests, colloquially known as Kimjang vests, has surged recently, prompting sportswear brands to launch new designs.
According to Naver Data Labs search trend report on the 26th, the search volume for Kimjang vest and related keywords (such as countryside vest, floral vest, and grandma vest) skyrocketed to 100 on the 19th. This is a significant rise from the previous peak of 90 recorded on December 16th last year, coinciding with a sudden drop in temperatures, which has led to a dramatic increase in interest.
Initially perceived as somewhat outdated in design, the Kimjang vest has gained renewed popularity after being spotted on social media platforms worn by members of popular girl groups like BLACKPINKs Jennie and aespas Karina. This resurgence has transformed the vest into a retro fashion item that resonates with the MZ generation (Millennials and Generation Z). The traditional floral patterns have also diversified, with designs now featuring checks, reversible styles, minimalistic quilting, and even fleece.
The popularity of the Kimjang vest can also be observed on fashion platforms. The fashion app Musinsa, which has a significant number of users in their 20s, reports that quilted floral vests are selling well. Some brands have even ventured into the pet apparel market, releasing Kimjang vests for dogs. Notably, BYCs pet brand Garyas recently showcased dog-sized Kimjang vests at a pop-up event.
With the growing interest among teenagers and those in their 20s, sports brand Adidas has also joined the trend, launching floral items in their latest collection.
One such quilted jacket, priced around 150,000 KRW, combines warmth and style, and it is currently sold out in all but one size on the official online store, indicating its high demand.
