Samsung Plans to Launch Smart Glasses Following Galaxy XR Headset Release

Samsung Electronics is set to expand its augmented reality (XR) offerings with the upcoming release of smart glasses, following the introduction of their Galaxy XR headset. One of the key partners in this venture is Gentle Monster, a leading eyewear brand.
During the Galaxy XR unveiling event on the 22nd, Samsung announced plans to showcase a range of XR devices, including XR glasses. Kim Jung-hyun, the head of the MX Business Divisions Customer Experience Office, stated that the design of the Galaxy XR was planned with form factor scalability in mind, suggesting that more exciting products will emerge in the future.
Smart glasses are considered the final destination for XR devices as they can be worn in everyday life. Users will be able to view real-time maps through the glasses lenses and easily capture photos and videos using the built-in camera. Additionally, external speakers attached to the glasses will allow for music listening and even real-time translation services.
Another advantage of smart glasses is their potential to integrate generative AI into daily life. By using smart glasses, users can share what they see with AI in real-time and obtain information. For instance, one could inquire about a building they see or ask the AI to find specific information during a meeting.
Samsung has confirmed its collaboration with Gentle Monster and the American eyewear company Warby Parker to develop these smart glasses. Unlike XR headsets that are worn on the head, the design and fashion aspects of smart glasses are crucial. Meta, a leading company in the smart glasses market, has formed strategic partnerships with brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley under EssilorLuxottica.
Currently, Meta holds a dominant position in the global smart glasses market with a 73% share as of the first half of this year. Chinese companies like Huawei, TCL, and Xiaomi hold approximately 10% of the market share. Meta’s smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban, sold over one million units last year alone, marking a threefold increase compared to the previous year.
