Autumn Foliage Season Begins Amid Shortened Viewing Periods Due to Climate Change

As the unusually hot summer comes to an end and the early autumn monsoon wraps up, the official autumn foliage season has begun. Due to climate anomalies, this years foliage is expected to peak later than usual, resulting in a shorter viewing period, making it a rare and precious sight.
According to the 2025 Forest Foliage Forecast Map released by the Korea Forest Service, the peak foliage in different regions is expected between late October and early November. Specifically, the foliage of maple trees is predicted to start around October 25 in Seoraksan, Gangwon Province, followed by Sobaeksan on October 27 and Gayasan on November 11. Coinciding with this, various festivals themed around autumn foliage, local culture, arts, and specialties will be held across the country, attracting autumn travelers.
In Chungcheongnam-do, the Yesan Market Samguk Festival will take place from the 23rd to the 26th, blending the fragrance of chrysanthemums, a warm bowl of gukbap (Korean rice soup), and the charming market scenery. The Gukbap Road and Food Zone will feature gukbap made with local agricultural products, romantic food stalls, and local food sales. The Chrysanthemum Road will be adorned with over 20,000 chrysanthemum sculptures and displays of bonsai and cut flowers, creating a vibrant showcase.
During the same period, Nonsan will be filled with the aroma of fermented seafood. The city of Nonsan and the Nonsan Cultural Tourism Foundation will hold the 2025 Ganggang Jeotgal Festival along the banks of the Geumgang River in Ganggang.
In Gyeongsangbuk-do, diverse festivals will be held in each city and county to welcome tourists attending the APEC Leaders Meeting in Gyeongju from the 27th to the 1st of the following month. Events include the Pohang Yeongildae Light Festival, Cheongsong Apple Festival, and the Punggi Ginseng Festival, showcasing the regions rich cultural and artistic heritage.
